The Chicago Sukkah Design Festival

The first-ever Chicago Sukkah Design Festival was a collaboration between the Lawndale Pop-Up Spot, Could Be Architecture, and numerous North Lawndale organizations, Chicago design and architecture firms, and volunteers to design and build sukkahs (huts or booths constructed for the Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot) that will be repurposed for other uses following the festival. The first Chicago Sukkah Design Festival ran from October 9-16, 2022, while the second festival ran from October 1-21, 2023. The third Chicago Sukkah Design Festival will be October 2024.

 

The Devious Mind of Khaaliq Haneef


A Visual Display

The Devious Mind of Khaaliq Haneef uses original satirical cartoons to push the boundaries of injustice, racism, and the normalized ideas of society. The bright colors used in Haneef’s art are juxtaposed with the dark themes, creating a palatable entry point to engage with his work.

TechTonic Black was the series of exhibits and events marking Lawndale Pop-Up Spot’s 2022 Afrofuturism Summer. Curated by Sojourner Zenobia, TechTonic Black is an opportunity to gather, dream, plan, and activate our way into the future, while being mindful of and engaging the past and present.

Artists exhibiting during Techtonic Black included Amanda Harth (Haven, June 10 - July 2), Nailah Golden (Trapfuturism, July 8-August 7); and Bobby Price (August 12 - September 4).

A large scale photograph and oral history exhibition showcasing elders in and from North Lawndale. The exhibit is an opportunity to celebrate those who have helped keep the neighborhood strong over several decades, and to hear the stories from their lives.
