A Safe Place

Welcome, everyone. We’re happy you’re here.

We put this exhibit together to try to help the North Lawndale community. We feel there’s too much danger, too much violence. We wanted to explore what “safety” means to us and how we can build it.

We know an exhibit in a container in a garden won’t solve all the world’s problems. But hopefully it will help people see things in a different way. We want to bring the community together - so invite your friends and family to visit “A Safe Place” and talk about these issues.

Opening Day

On August 24, 2019, the Lawndale Pop-Up Spot opened its doors to the public for the first time, in conjunction with a block party with the 1500 block of Spaulding and activities coordinated by the Youth Council of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago at Homan Square. We were thrilled to have our first exhibit be “A Safe Place.”

A Safe Place was open from Summer 2019-Summer 2020.

If you are interested in displaying a version of A Safe Place in your museum, art gallery, community center, or other space, please reach out to us at lawndalepopupspot <at> gmail.com. We would love to have as many Safe Places pop up around the city as possible!
