“The Body of Evidence” by Qyjon the Icon chosen as LPUS spring exhibition
CHICAGO - The Lawndale Pop-Up Spot is proud to present the “The Body of Evidence” by artist Qyjon the Icon as our first-ever exhibition selected by a paid panel of community members. The exhibition, which will feature Qyjon’s three dimensional collage pieces, explores the Black experience through the lens of the Black body, and its representation in media, history, politics, and world culture.
“As a community museum, we were excited to involve a larger group in the work of selecting our spring 2023 artist,” said Pop-Up Spot co-founder Chelsea Ridley. “For nearly the entire panel, this was their first time participating in such a process, and it was vital to us that they get a stipend for their time and efforts. The panel had several fantastic submissions to choose from; we are grateful for the care they put into making this selection.”
“The Body of Evidence” will open on Friday, May 26 and run through Saturday, June 24. The hours of operation are Wednesday through Friday 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. and Saturday 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The exhibition opening will take place from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on May 26 as part of the Pop-Up Spot’s Fridays on the Plaza series of events.
A special event entitled “A Conversation About Reparations” will take place on Saturday, June 3 in collaboration with the organization Equity and Transformation (E.A.T.). Tickets are available now and a $25 donation is encouraged; proceeds will benefit E.A.T.’s Chicago Future Fund.
From the Artist
“The Body of Evidence exhibit will engage visitors in discussions and reflections on the black experience. This will create a space for dialogue, where visitors can learn, understand and appreciate the rich cultural heritage within the black experience. The exhibit will not only educate visitors but also challenge the dominant narratives and perspectives surrounding the treatment of black bodies.”
